I do a lot of teaching of math using outside resources other than the book. When the book comes home at the end of the chapter, a lot of it will not be filled out. I pick and choose what sections I think are most important for the learning. Students are welcome to bring home the entire lesson we did in class on a particular day, but the rest of the math book stays at school. This way student’s don’t forget it at home, and are prepared for class each day.
As I teach and as we correct, I stop to check in with the students and see what their understanding is. If they are not understanding a concept, they need to let me know. If they don’t respond when I ask if anyone needs clarification, I assume they understand the concept. If your child does not speak up and ask for clarification when prompted, I assume they understand the concept. If your child thinks they understand the concept, and when they get home they realize they don’t understand it, please send me an e-mail to let me know, or have your child bring back the undone assignment and have them let me know they didn’t understand and need help. I will make sure I re-teach the concept. If I don’t’ know the student doesn’t understand the concept, I can’t help them fix it.
We will cover the entire math book this year, but we might not do it chapter by chapter or lesson by lesson. I jump around in the book or the chapters to make concepts flow more smoothly. Be assured, that even though I do this, I will cover all of the curriculum.
